Quality socks
 

Okay, I'm looking for input. Where does one find quality socks at a fair price? I am tired of the lousy socks I find at Wally's, etc. but I don't want to just whip some money out and hope I get something that won't be holey after a few washings. Seems like everything comes from China. It's a conspiracy I tell Ya!

I get socks at zappos.com.
I only buy 100% synthetic socks anymore, no cotton at all. Cotton is bad for socks.

I have paid about $5-6 a pair on the past (not counting shipping). That's quite a bit more than typical wal-mart cotton, but then, the synthetics do last longer than regular cotton socks do. Get only socks that have a fairly tight fabric weave.

And you have less risk of blisters with synthetic socks--so there is a practical benefit, it's not just a matter of "comfort".

The only synthetic socks that you should NOT buy are the big, puffy "rag" hiking socks. The fabric weave is way too loose, and these will quickly fall apart in just a couple weeks of hard daily wear.

Thanks for the advice Bill. I will try the synthetic. The cotton socks I've been buying just don't last and they get a build-up of pilled cotton in the toe which can be irritating if not removed. I was wondering how hemp would hold up and whether or not a hemp mixture sock was available. I guess I'll do some research.

get 100% wool socks you will not be disapointed some of the outfitting stores
have them you might even find them cheaper out of australia through ebay?

10 to 20 dollars a pair and they will out last and out perform anything from
wallmart.

Never tried them--but if they only come in cotton, I won't be.

Never tried hemp socks either.
Nor hemp-anything-else.
There's a long list of things that you can make using hemp, if you insist.
The list of things that it's actually best for is much shorter.

Hmmmm...

I'd have to recommend ULTIMAX over THURLO if you're looking for socks that last years instead of months.

Neither are cheap,but the ULTIMAX hold up far better than the THURLO socks I've owned.

No,I'm not kidding about the years...they last that long.

Find a woman who knows how to knit. My aunt knitted my father a pair of wool socks for Christmas one year, which he wore frequently because he like the comfort and fit. FIFTEEN years later he still had them, but seldom wore them because they were starting to get threadbare in the heel. That's what I call good quality!

Wear only socks made of Merrino wool. Extremely comfortable, warm, and merrino wool is a natural deodorant. Your feet will never stink.

I suggest trying bamboo socks. Was gifted some a few months ago and I love them.

Thank's for all the replies so far. I'm going to order some of the merino wool (ultimax) and also the bamboo. I've heard that bamboo is very tough and comfortable to wear. I've also heard alot of good things about wool. I am slightly allergic to wool but I don't think the socks will be a problem. The older I get, the more I appreciate quality in all things.

In my experience so far, it is usually better in the long run to spend the extra dollar to surround yourself with high quality, well manufactured and useful products.

In the end it can even save you money because you don't have to keep replacing stuff when it breaks or wears out due to poor workmanship or materials.

I have some "put up" but have not used them. I tried a pair on and they felt real nice, good support and they come with a lifetime wear out warranty, but they are a tad pricey at $10.00 a pair. Good reviews online at the link.

I think it does, although I'm sure I'll still buy the cheap ones too. What is cost effective is also balanced by the pleasure of using a quality item. I'm starting to lose my patience with poor quality items.

Have you ever had a really good pair of shoes? They cost alot but what a joy to wear! In my professional life I try to provide the absolute best service I can. I take pride and joy in a job well done and the thought that a customer might be unhappy with my work or the materials I use is intolerable to me. This colors the rest of my life. I hate it when I buy a tool or machine that is poorly crafted and breaks down just when I need it. We should strive for quality and demand it of ourselves and others.

That said, I do realize that looks don't matter as much as the underlying quality/integrity of a product or a person. It is sad that packaging can so easily fool the masses.

I have a few pair. It isn't quite true that they'll never get stinky, but a day after you wear them, they don't smell no more.

These are also remarkably soft. And durable.

I've been buying Starter brand athletic socks form walmart. They work good for me. For work socks or hiking hunting I usually go with wool.

X-Static = Silver anti-bacterial material. I have been wearing these socks almost everyday at work for about three years. They don't get smelly and neither do the boots. Well worth the money IMO. Bx3

Afraid I don't know any good brands, but remember: Cotton Kills. (in a survivalist situation)

It gets wet and does not dry again.

People have lost their feet b/c of it.
